Friday Night Guest Lecture Series 2020 / 2021
Friday Night Guest Lecture - Anne Harrington, PhD
Mental Health in Times of Challenge: from Vietnam to COVID

Times of national crisis and upheaval have always catalyzed profound changes in the priorities of the mental health professions and their understandings of mental health and illness. In our own time—marked as it is by a once-in-a-century public health crisis, economic dislocation, and a long-overdue reckoning with inequities and entrenched racism—we should therefore expect to see the emergence of urgent new kinds of conversations about the priorities of mental health work. What is the emerging story to be told, so far as it can already be discerned? And how is it either drawing on or resisting the legacies of previous conversations and projects?

Anne Harrington, PhD, is the Franklin L. Ford Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University. She is also director of undergraduate studies in the History of Science, faculty dean of an undergraduate residential community called Pforzheimer House, in which capacity she also serves as chair of the Harvard Faculty Dean community. Her most recent book, Mind Fixers: Psychiatry’s Troubled Search for the Biology of Mental Illness was published in 2019.
